The right month can matter more than the right hotel. We rated 348 destinations month by month on two things: the weather, and how busy and expensive it gets. Choose a destination to see its whole year, or tap any month in the chart below to see where we recommend going that month.
We rate weather on what it does to a trip. Heavy rain, storm season, extreme heat and seasonal closures all count against a month, because they are hard on every traveler. Great means comfortable and reliable; Avoid means the season works against you. Great is judged against the place itself, so a tropical dry season can run into the low 90s°F and an Arctic summer can stay in the 50s.
These move together. When demand drops, hotel rates and tour prices usually follow, though a festival can fill an otherwise quiet month. Darker means busier and more expensive.
Cherry blossoms, ski seasons and wildlife migrations show up as events rather than weather, so a cold month can still be the reason to go. Events that bring a crowd surge are marked busy. Holidays that move, such as Easter, Lunar New Year and Ramadan, carry their 2027 dates, and we update them each November.
Where the U.S. State Department rates a country Level 3 (Reconsider Travel) or Level 4 (Do Not Travel), we show a warning with a link to the current advisory. Advisories change, so check the live page before you book.
Ratings describe a typical year. Weather varies and event dates move, so confirm specifics before you commit.
